Pour TomTom #OpenStreetMap devient une « super source » #maps

Dans une annonce qu'elle présente comme l'une des plus importantes de son histoire, la société TomTom explique que son nouveau service « Maps Platform » s’appuiera sur des « super sources » telles qu'OpenStreetMap. #geodata

Je me suis livré à une petite recherche historique pour voir comment la position de TomTom sur OpenStreetMap a évolué en 10 ans. Une histoire qui rappelle le rapport de la société Microsoft au noyau Linux, le qualifiant de « cancer » avant de l'intégrer dans son propre système d'exploitation.

Ainsi en 2012, TomTom écrivait :

« Despite the positives, recent studies have highlighted some major drawbacks of open source mapping, specifically with regard to safety, accuracy and reliability. »

« Indeed the major benefit – the community aspect – has itself presented problems, leaving maps wide open to attack. »

« TomTom maps are very different to their open source counterparts. »

Et aujourd'hui, TomTom annonce :

« The company will bring its own data together with data from new "super sources", partners and open-source projects, such as OpenStreetMap, to deliver a new map with greater coverage, detail and freshness. »

« OpenStreetMap is an open-source map. It’s incredibly detailed, created by millions of passionate and dedicated hobbyist mapmakers. »

« Over the past decade, OpenStreetMap has exploded to become one of the best-known and most detailed maps of the planet. »

Bien entendu, je ne peux qu'être d'accord pour considérer OpenStreetMap comme une « super source ». C'est ce que j'observe pour tous les projets que j'accompagne dans ce domaine depuis... plus de 10 ans ! #opendata
